Dr. Martin Hurtado, M.D.

“It’s important to take time with patients. I don’t like the volume-based approach to patient care. Good health is more than treatment and medicine. It’s also about taking care of ourselves and the environment we live in.

Too often we put out fires but don’t deal with fundamental issues of health. Likewise, we can’t deliver effective health care without caring for the wellness of the planet, too.”

Dr. Hurtado is a board-certified family physician who received his M.D. in 1993 from the University of California, Irvine. He completed his post graduate training at the Contra Costa County Regional Medical Center in Martinez, California. Upon completion of his training, he remained on staff at the Medical Center for several years.

He then entered the Health Service Corps, whose mission is to bring comprehensive, quality health care to rural areas. He also worked in the community clinic system of California. There, he was associate faculty at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Hurtado has been and remains involved with teaching of medical students and residents in training throughout his career.

Prior to partnering with Eva Schmidt to create Inkwell Medical Group, he maintained a private practice in a larger group setting in Springfield. There he earned a reputation for compassion, empathy and excellent medical work. He has also been involved in the Volunteers in Medicine program, a local non-profit clinic in west Eugene serving the uninsured. There, he managed diabetic patients in a group setting with a diabetic educator, and brings that experience to Inkwell’s chronic disease management programs.

Dr. Hurtado is bilingual in Spanish and has a special commitment to Hispanic patients and their families. He welcomes Spanish speaking patients.

Dr. Hurtado and his wife, Anna, also a physician and both avid hockey parents, raise their two sons on an organic farm in rural Eugene. Consistent with their philosophy of sustainable living, they raise livestock for healthy meat and have a large menagerie of animals.
